The magnetic scaler I recently purchased was a game-changer for my algae-encrusted glass 'picture window' tank. With its narrow, deep dimensions and proximity to the kitchen and dining room, cleaning this particular type of tank is no easy feat.
As it turns out, our previous attempts at tackling this task with manual scraping had been nothing short of ineffective. The sheer volume of glass in a small space makes it nearly impossible to remove algae without damaging the surrounding material. In addition, direct sunlight exacerbates the situation, causing the green and sometimes red or brown flecks to become embedded more stubbornly.
To combat this challenge, I discovered that these magnetic scalers were an absolute dream to use. My tank sits in a particularly challenging location, requiring me to rely on specialized equipment like long poles or magnetic tools to tackle even the most entrenched algae buildup.
These pads feature a clever card piece between them when first purchased, which allowed for easy disassembly and reconfiguration as needed. Once they've attracted to each other, the strong magnets will stick them together securely. However, it's essential to exercise caution when working with these products – if they're brought within six inches of each other without the card in place, it can be nearly impossible to separate them again.
A few clever manipulations later, I was able to dislodge the pads and begin cleaning the glass. The smooth exterior of one pad allowed me to slide it apart by gently folding 2 butter knives between its surfaces – a delicate process that required patience and finesse. With the correct setup in place, I could then attach either the plastic or blade attachment to the pad and drop it into the tank.
To effectively remove algae from the glass surface, I employed an innovative technique: moving slowly across the glass while pushing forward with the scraping attachment rather than scrubbing backwards and forwards. As the leading edge of one pad came into contact with the glass, it would lift off and retrieve the adjacent pad, which would then line up perfectly to continue the cleaning process.
It's essential to remember that this is an ongoing process, particularly during warmer months when algae growth can be more rapid. To prevent damage to the pads or their attachment system, I recommend moving too quickly through a particular area – it may dislodge one of the pads and render the attachment ineffective.
In the end, these magnetic scalers prove to be well worth the investment, not only for removing algae but also for preventing damage to the surrounding material. If you're looking for an effective solution to tackle your own algae-encrusted glass tanks, I wholeheartedly recommend giving them a try – even if it means replacing them periodically to keep up with wear and tear.
