I've tried adding red and white millet to a wild bird seed mix, but my finches have taken to using their own tubular feeder instead. This change has made a big difference in attracting sparrows like them over a variety of other offerings on the feeding station. In contrast, I've noticed that starlings tend to avoid this new option, while the tit family seem content with their usual spots.
I'd definitely recommend millet for use in house and tree bird feeders - it's been a great addition to my setup.
